Shemekia Copeland

Welcome back my fellow Blues lovers! For my post this week I am featuring some photos of an artist I have covered before and is still just as amazing as ever… Shemekia Copeland. The photos are from a March 12, 2011 show at Iridium Jazz Club in New York. This was the second of two nights there for Shemekia and the band. The band featured two new members since the last time I saw them, Morris Roberts on drums and Willie Scandlyn on rhythm guitar and back vocals. Kevin Jenkins on bass and Arthur Neilson on guitar filled out the rest of the band and of course there’s the powerhouse vocals of Shemekia. What can I say about Shemekia that I haven’t said before? She’s amazing and a force to be reckoned with. She can belt out the blues with the best of them or bring it down a couple of notches and caress the hell out of a slow blues. And of course the band was spot-on in its support. For those of you that have not yet seen Shemekia perform I highly recommend you do so. She’s the real deal!
SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC...go out and catch a show.
My thanks to Ron Sturm and Scott Barbarino of Iridium Jazz Club for the access and hospitality and also the fine crew they have working there.
If you find yourself in New York City check the Iridium music schedule because there is always something good going on there. Hey, it’s the place where the late, great Les Paul entertained crowds for years, how can you go wrong?!
